Natural Range

Guppies are native to South America and the West Indies.

Maximum size and longevity

Sizes can vary from 3 to 5 cm.

Water quality
· Temperature: 24°C – 26°C.
· pH: 7.0-7.5
· General hardness: 250-300 ppm (if you start to get sick, doubling this dose can help).

Guppies need clean, oxygen-rich water, make sure tanks aren’t overcrowded, well ventilated, and filters cleaned regularly.
Make sure all biological filters are working properly, ensuring that no ammonia or nitrite is present.

Feeding

An active fish, guppies use a huge amount of energy and need to be fed at least 3 times a day with a variety of foods including dry, fresh, frozen or live food.

Guppies are surface eaters and will readily accept most prepared foods. However, they should be given a high-vegetable diet and a dry food like Spirulina should be used occasionally.

Compatibility

They are suitable for a community pond densely planted with other peaceful fish. It’s best to choose tankmates with slightly alkaline hard water needs in your aquarium.

Avoid crowding with larger or aggressive species that will nip them because of their colorful tails.

Male guppies can continually “harass” female guppies if kept together, this can be avoided in commercial situations by stocking males and females in separate tanks. This will stop continuous playback.

Color and varieties

While there are many beautiful wild forms of livebearers, guppies have been selectively bred around the world to produce a huge variety of colors, body and fin shapes.

Sexing

Viviparous fish have the common trait of giving birth by swimming young (ovoviviparous), rather than by laying eggs like most other fish. To achieve this, males have a modified anal fin called a gonopodium which is used to facilitate internal fertilization of the female. Once fertilized, the eggs mature inside the mother’s oviduct. The eggs then hatch
internally and give “birth” to the resulting offspring soon after.

Guppie fingerlings are about 7 to 10 mm long at birth and are probably the most easily bred species on finely ground dry food and do not require special food like most other species when they start feeding.

Males and females are usually easily distinguished as males have a smaller body with brightly colored tails, females also have a dark “gravid” patch in the anal region.

Its ease of reproduction means that it is the first species that many hobbyists start breeding.

General information

Guppies are probably the most popular livebearer among both aquarium owners and advanced breeders.

It has become a species of fish for hobbyists with selective breeding resulting in many varieties of spectacular coloring and fins. These fish are generally robust and tolerant of a wide range of aquarium conditions – for this reason they are often recommended for beginners.

However, due to intense selective breeding, guppies can be more difficult to keep than their wild ancestors.

For this reason, it is important to try to match the tank conditions to their requirements of slightly harsh and alkaline conditions, otherwise they can become weak and prone to bacterial infections. Will be prone to bacterial disease in soft water.

Interestingly, guppies introduced into empty home aquariums, where the water is well aged and there is plant life and algae to graze on, can transition from the previously described hard water with little or no ill effect. This is attributed to the higher levels of stress the fish are exposed to under commercial conditions, such as fish constantly entering and leaving the ponds, more handling and higher densities.

Natural range

Burmese rummynose comes from Myanmar.
They have a limited distribution in Lake Inle and its surrounding waters.

Maximum Size and Longevity

Burmese rummynose can grow to a length of 4 cm, and will live for 2 to 3 years if kept in the right conditions.

Water quality

Rummynose Burmese may be temperature sensitive and prefer slightly alkaline water:

Temperature: 21-25°C

pH: 7.0 —7.5

GH: 150 – 250 ppm

food

Burmese rummynose are omnivores and generally eat a wide variety of foods. Be sure to provide food that is small enough for their tiny mouths.

Compatibility

This fish is quite peaceful in a species tank or in a community, although males can be skittish when in spawning condition. These fish live in schools in the wild and are best kept in groups of six fish, preferably more.

Color and Variety

A small silvery blue fish. Males develop red tips on the nose and fins.

sexual differences

The male has a “rummy-red” nose and red tips on the tail fin. Males have a milky or bluish coloration on the body and are usually larger than the female. Females are not red in color and are usually more silvery.

General information

As they are lake fish, they prefer little or no water movement. They color best when their natural habitat is replicated in a peaceful species or community pond. These hardy minnows prefer a heavily planted tank with places to hide. The tank must be covered, as these fish can jump if startled.

Origins

The ancient Chinese kept goldfish some 1600 years ago.
The original wild, drab coloured fish were selectively bred until the beautiful clear bright colours of today’s fish were developed.
The Japanese obtained some of these fish about 500 years ago and have developed some of the more unusual types of goldfish.
Today there are dozens of different types. Even though they are different colours and
have different body, tail and eye shapes, they are all the one species, Carassius auratus.

Maximum Size and Longevity

Goldfish are capable of reaching the grand old age of 20 years and attain a length of between 12 to 30cm, depending on variety.

Water Quality

· Temperature: 15°C – 20°C is the ideal range, however they can tolerate temperatures outside of this range.
Outside of this range however, they can become stressed and more prone to illness.

· pH: 7.0—7.5
· General Hardness: 150 ppm.

Feeding

A good staple food for goldfish is a high quality floating granule. The small size is best, as this assures all fish get their fair share. Feeding floating granules, two to three times a day, in the right quantities is one of the major factors in keeping goldfish healthy and active. For variety, occasionally substitute flake food, and, more importantly, some vegetable material.

Compatibility

Goldfish are best kept with other Goldfish, in a tank or pond. A good rule of thumb to minimise aggression is to keep straight tailed fish together with other straight tailed
fish, and fantailed fish with fantailed fish.

Colour and Varieties

Over 1600 years of selective breeding has resulted in a wide range of varieties and colours. The most frequently seen are divided into 2 categories: Straight (or Single)
tailed, such as the Comet, Shubunkin or Common Goldfish, and the Fantailed varieties such as the Fantail and Ryukin.
Ranchus and Lionheads have a double tail and no dorsal (top) fin. Orandas are well known for their short, globular body and characteristic head growth—this may take years to develop fully. Other varieties, less frequently available, include Telescopic eyed fantails such as the Butterfly Tail; Pom Poms, Bubble Eyes and Pearlscales.

Goldfish are available in a wide, seemingly limitless, range of colours. The most frequently seen is Red, which can be varying shades of orange red, orange and orange yellow. Calico and Shubunkin colouring refers to a mottled pattern of blue, red, orange, brown, yellow or black. Black goldfish are available, but they can tend to fade indoors.

Sexing

Small goldfish are difficult to tell apart. Larger fish at about one year old can be distinguished fairly easily. Males develop small white tubercles along the leading edge of the pectoral fins. When in breeding condition the tubercles can also be noticed on the gill plates.

General Information

Goldfish are hardy, colourful, easy to care for and the ideal beginner’s fish. They make a perfect first pet. As experience and interest levels grows, their fascinating history and wide range of varieties also ensures that they are highly prized by the enthusiast.

Scientific Names

Although there are many species available, most common commercially available species are:
Aphyosemion sp – Killifish species
Aplocheilus sp, Epiplatys sp,
Pseudepiplaty sp – Panchax species

Maximum Size and Longevity

Killifish are usually small fish and, depending on the type of species, the size varies from 2 to 6 cm.

Panchax species will grow to a maximum size of 10cm.
Many of the Aphyosemion species are annual species and can only live for one year, while the Panchax group can live for several years.

Water quality

Water quality will vary depending on species, but as a general rule prefer mild acid water.

Temperature: 20oC – 24oC
pH: 5.5 – 7.5
General hardness: 50-150 ppm

Feeding

Killifish have a small mouth structure, so be sure to select foods that are suitable.

Compatibility

Many killifish can be safely combined with small catfish, small tetras and other non-territorial fish.

Do not keep them with larger predatory fish that would attack this small fish. They can also be kept alone in a small tank where they can readily display their amazing reproductive colors.

Color and varieties

The Killifish group has a very diverse color and great variety.

For example, many of the Aphiosemion species have brightly colored males. One possible reason for their bright colors is because they are commonly found in dark waters with low visibility and therefore need really bright and striking colors to attract females.

Tips to maintain successfully

These brightly colored fish are not fussy and are ideal for a community aquarium. They prefer a planted tank and softer water conditions on the acid side.

General Information and Reproduction

Some species in this group can lay their eggs in the substrate when their natural habitats dry up and the eggs hatch when water returns with rain.
Some killifish such as the Aphyosemion have also been called “annual fish” for this reason. Other species can spawn among floating plants and often reproduce in
densely planted community tanks. Males are often extremely colorful, while small females are subdued in their coloring.
Afiosemion species may be prone to velvet, but respond well to normal treatments for this disease.

Generally a robust group with no particular needs.

Discus is the common name given to all freshwater fish species classified in the genus Symphysodon.

It belongs to the cichlid family and currently comprises two species and three subspecies. It is endemic to South America, where it can be found in rivers in the Amazon basin, in Brazil, Peru and Colombia.

Its main characteristics are its colors and the discoid shape of its body. It lives in schools and feeds on small crustaceans, larvae, insects and fruits in its natural habitat.

It reaches an average of 15 to 18 centimeters in length and inhabits small lakes and streams with calm, clear waters. The discus is one of the most popular freshwater fish in the world for its varied colors and its long dorsal and tail fin. It is an ornamental and extremely peaceful species, being suitable to be raised with fish with the same temperament; however, it is very demanding with regard to water quality, so it cannot always be kept in aquariums with many different species.

taxonomy

The discus belongs to the Heroini tribe, of the Cichlidae family, in the order Perciformes, which is still little studied. It was described by the Austrian zoologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840 as Symphysodon. The exact phylogenetic position of this genus among the others belonging to the Heroini tribe is unknown. The type species of this genus is Symphysodon discus.

The specific name Discus refers to its discoid form, while its generic name, Symphysodon, is a Greek word. Symphys means growing in groups and odon means teeth, referring to their reduced dentition relative to other cichlids.

The genus includes only two species: Symphysodon discus (Disco-Heckel) and Symphysodon aequifasciatus (Disco-blue-brown), but recent studies carried out with their DNA have shown the possible existence of a third species, named by scientists as Symphysodon tarzoo; however the analyzes were not conclusive. The acceptance of this species is still being studied by researchers.

Subspecies

Three subspecies are currently recognized, based on genetic analysis. All were described by the American ichthyologist Leonard Peter Schultz in 1960, after the description of Pelegrin Franganillo-Balboa of the species Symphysodon aequifasciatus in 1904:

Symphysodon aequifasciatus axelrodi – Brown discus mite: It has a yellowish-brown body and a head with bluish streaks.
Symphysodon aequifasciatus haraldi – Blue discus mite: It has a light brown body, with strong blue streaks on the head, back and fins.
Symphysodon aequifasciatus aequifasciatus – Green Discus Acara: It has a blue-green body, with striking blue streaks on the head, back and fins.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The discus is native to the Amazon, but it can only be found in some countries in South America. The Heckel disc is found in the eastern part of the Amazon, mainly in the Nhamundá, Branco, Negro, Purus, Abacaxis and rivers Trumpets. The green disk has a restricted distribution to the western part of the Amazon, in the Japurá, Içá and Nanay rivers. The brown-disk and blue-disk subspecies are generally found in the Solimões, Amazon, Urubu, Juruá, Tefé, Coari, Uatumã, Trombetas, Tapajós, Jari and Tocantins rivers. The blue-brown disk can be found in the beds of Amazon rivers and in some hydrographic basins in Colombia and Peru, with a wider distribution of the genus.

They inhabit rivers with calm, shallow and clear waters, with abundant aquatic vegetation, submerged trunks and roots, being slightly warm, with acidic characteristics and low hardness. They live mainly in floodplain lakes and marginal lakes.

behavior and reproduction

The discus has a territorial behavior and does not carry out reproductive migrations. During the rainy season, they live alone or in small groups in deep water, but during the dry season they form large schools near fallen trees along the banks of the lakes.

It reaches sexual maturity at twelve months of age and spawns more than once a year, with about 1,500 eggs per spawn. At the time of reproduction, they form couples through sexual courtship, characteristic of cichlids. They usually lay eggs on large leaves or stones. During spawning, the female lays a small amount of eggs that will soon be fertilized by the male. pair maintains constant agitation of the water around them, fanning them with their fins, to ensure the necessary oxygenation. Then the parents are committed to cleaning them and keeping them safe until the larvae hatch.

Depending on the water temperature, the eggs hatch after two or five days and remain with the yolk sac for another three or four days, until they can swim freely. After hatching, the larvae are fed mucus released by their parents for two weeks. After this period, they can be fed with brine shrimp, but they will need their parents’ secretion for another thirty days. With approximately fifty days, they can be separated from adults.

Characteristics

The discus is generally referred to as The King of Aquarius. It is considered a small fish, reaching 15 centimeters in length. It has a laterally flattened body with a relatively long dorsal and caudal fin, which contribute to the discoid shape of its body. It has only one nasal orifice on each side of the nostril, a prostatic mouth and thick lips. Males are larger, more colorful and with the first dorsal fin rays thicker and longer. They do not have evident sexual dimorphism.

Their colors vary depending on the species and may have red, blue, green, brown, white and yellow tones, and currently there are about 600 variations. They have several rows of scales at the base of the dorsal and caudal fins, generally blue streaks throughout the body and eight to nine dark transversal bands over the body.

Threats / Diseases

Like many other fish, the discus is susceptible to infections such as parasites, mycoses, bacteriosis, viruses and even ectoparasites.
However, under natural conditions the infectious agents that infest them are not numerous enough to affect the health of the host, because the nutritional and physiological state of the fish is properly adjusted to the environment. Specifically for the discus, the following parasites are found : protozoa (Piscinoodinium pillulare, Ichthyophthirius multifillis, Costia necatrix, Trichodina), monogenetic metazoans (Dactylogyrus vastator and Gyrodactylus elegans), mycoses and bacterioses.

In captivity, four diseases attack the species more frequently, as well as other species:

Gastroenteritis: by Aeromonas hydrophila a gram-negative bacterium.
Hexamitosis: caused by protozoa such as Hexamita meleagridis and Hexamita symphysodonis.
Capillariasis: caused by the nematodes Capillaria pterophylli. It usually affects species belonging to the cichlid family.
Ichthyouris Infestation: Caused by parasites. Affects fish intestines.

Extinction risk

Despite not being on the IUCN Red List, the number of discus in the wild has declined on a large scale since the 1990s. for breeding in aquariums. Other factors of anthropogenic influence that contribute to the disappearance of the species is gold mining, which releases mercury into the water, deforestation and forest fires, as they increase the temperature of the region and prevent the formation of clouds, extending the dry period.

captive breeding

Discus discus bred in an aquarium.
The first discus bred in captivity date back to 1933. They were captured in the wild and died shortly after being introduced to the aquarium. It was from 1935 onwards that the first reports of specimens that reproduced in captivity and reached adulthood appeared. During this period, they were exported in small quantities to Europe and the United States. Larger exports took place after the end of World War II, when motorsports developed. However, it was only in the 1980s that a systematic activity of discus exploration began.

It is one of the most popular species in the world used for fishkeeping, as well as one of the most explored. However, they are very demanding about the conditions in which they live, and it is not advisable to maintain them by aquarists who have not yet mastered the control of the water parameters of their aquariums. They should be kept in large aquariums with a minimum of 20 liters for each specimen, in order to avoid territorial disputes. They are very sensitive in relation to water quality and prefer acidic pH water, around 4.2 and 6.2 and with a temperature around of 26 and 30°C.

As they are found in rivers with abundant aquatic vegetation and poor lighting, aquariums should have plants, decorated with logs and stones, and placed in low light places, to resemble their natural habitat. However, not all plants adapt to water temperature and low lighting, with some of the most suitable being the Pygmy Chain Swords (Echinodorus tenellus) and the Java Fern (Microsorium pteropus).

They should not be bred with aggressive species or species that eat quickly, as they can be attacked or end up not eating. They should be kept with fish with a temperament equal to yours and that are adapted to the same quality of water. The most suitable species are neons (Paracheirodon innesi), some species of tetras (Characidae), such as the cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi), catfish (Siluriformes) and some cichlids (Cichlidae). They accept live and frozen foods well, as well as industrialized flake feed.

There are 2 main lakes in Africa that harbor these cichlids – Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika.

These two lakes contain more than 1,500 known varieties of fish and new discoveries are still being made. It is quite remarkable that most cichlids of the “Great Lakes of Africa” are endemic to their own lake (ie, they are not found anywhere else in the world).

Water quality

African cichlids like their waters to be clear and clean, so having a good filtration system is an essential factor.

The general water conditions are as follows:

pH: 7.6 – 8.0

GH: 300 – 400 ppm

Temp: 25° – 27° (for playback, slightly higher 28°)

Food

When feeding African cichlids you should be aware that their diet must be varied. For example, Tropheus cichlids and Goby cichlids are mainly vegetarian and accept foods like spirulina flakes well. Most cichlids will also feed on frozen brine shrimp and dehydrated shrimp. Nutravit’s food line includes spirulina feed, dehydrated shrimp and specific feed for African cichlids.

African cichlids are known to contract a disease called ‘Malawi Swell’ which can be prevented by feeding the fish the correct food and making sure the feed is of good quality and within the shelf life.

Color and varieties

There are many different types of African lake cichlids. As mentioned earlier, there are over 1500 species of this fish.

Some of the most popular among aquarium owners are: Peacock Cichlids, Electric Yellow Cichlids, Tropheus Cichlids, Princess Cichlids and Zebra Cichlids.

Reproduction

African cichlids are divided into two categories of breeding type, they are mouth breeders and substrate breeders.

In mouth breeders the females will hold the eggs and chicks in their mouth until they are ready to be released (with some exceptions where the male plays this role).

Substrate breeders lay eggs in rocks, in caves or in a depression in the sand and both parents protect the eggs and the young.

Adult African cichlids will be very protective of their babies and will fight to keep them safe.

General information

Like other aquarium fish, African cichlids are dependent on their environment for their well-being. Providing good quality water, correct nutrition and a compatible environment are the items that will keep these beautiful fish healthy in the aquarium.

1 – Research about the subject

Before buying fish, aquariums, feed, furniture and decoration, do a lot of research to understand every nuance of an aquarium system and avoid buying incompatible fish, purchase feeds suitable for the correct species, aquarium size, filtration, water temperature, water preparation and aquarium location.

2 – Fresh or salt water aquarium?

For the beginner in the world of fishkeeping, I recommend starting with freshwater aquariums as they are generally a little less complex than marine aquariums, with fewer water parameters to be monitored and because they are easier to replenish the aquarium water, both in partial exchanges or maintenance.

Remember that in an aquarium, you can have other types of life besides fish. If you opt for a freshwater aquarium, you can have an aquarium planted with varieties of plants and driftwood.

3 – Where to place the aquarium?

Important considerations when choosing a place for your aquarium:

The place must not have direct sunlight;

Need to have close shots;

It needs to be out of reach of animals;

The table or furniture must be stable and secure;

It must be visible from all points;

And no obstacles for handling or cleaning.

4 – Size of the Aquarium?

For you who are new to aquarium, the ideal is to choose aquariums between 38 and 96 liters, as they are not so big and are easy to clean. However, think again about the place you have chosen, as we need to know if the place can withstand the weight of the aquarium.

Test with your own weight to make sure it’s strong enough.

Another information that is interesting for you to know is that the larger the aquarium, the greater its chemical stability.

The shape doesn’t matter, but it’s often used in a cubic and/or rectangular shape.

5 – Lighting

It is also very important to know that the aquarium needs to be in a place without direct sunlight (which can influence the temperature increase in the aquarium and help in the proliferation of unwanted algae), and in a place that allows its handling.

Luminaires such as HQI, T5/T8/PL or LED lamps are the most used in aquariums. Each one has a specific characteristic, with its advantages and disadvantages. Lately, hobbyists tend to prefer LED luminaires due to their durability, brightness and for being more economical.

For planted aquarium, aquarists tend to use light fixtures with T5 or T8 lamps in pink, white and actinic blue. You can also opt for LED luminaires with these same colors.

Remember that you need to keep the habitat as natural as possible, so you must copy nature, increasing fish survival.

6 – Which Gravel to Use?

The choice of substrate will also depend on the choice of your ecosystem.

For the freshwater aquarium, the substrate may vary depending on the types of fish you have chosen, be it acidic or alkaline water fish. If the choice is for acidic water fish, usually use basalt gravel, pebble or river gravel in general.

If it is an aquarium with alkaline water of fish such as African and American cichlids, it is usually used the same type of gravel as the marine aquarium, such as alemda or ground coral bones, as these types of gravel make the water more alkaline.

Once the gravel has been chosen, wash it in order to remove some of the finer and lighter sand that normally makes the water more turbid.

7 – Filtering System

There are several types of filtration, being they filtering through an internal filter, external filter (HangOn), canister and filtering through the sump that applies to both marine and fresh aquarium. All but the sump already have internal pumps which will move the water for filtration, passing through its compartments and consequently oxygenating the water.

In the case of the sump, it will be necessary to place a booster pump, which will send water from under the sump to the aquarium (display) above, and consequently oxygenate the water as well, in addition to filtering using media and filtering elements introduced in the sump.

Filtering is what will remove impurities from the water, remember that quality water is equal to healthy fish.

8 – Monitor the Temperature

You must use a thermometer to monitor the temperature. The beginner in aquarium needs to be aware of the temperature of the aquarium, keeping the temperature as constant as possible, as temperature variations can directly affect the health of your fish, plant or coral.

The water heating is done through a heater that may or may not have a thermostat. If you choose a heater with a thermostat (which is more suitable) this will ensure that the heater automatically turns off when it reaches the temperature you set.

If your heater does not have a thermostat, you should carefully monitor the temperature of your water, as it may heat up more than recommended, harming your fish. If you do not have either heater, you can run the risk of the temperature dropping beyond what is recommended for your fish, which can cause several problems and even cause your death.

The temperature must be suitable according to the species that is living in your aquarium.

9 – Which Fish to Choose?

Try to research and read about the aquatic ecosystem and try to identify with some species.

There are species of fish considered to be ideal for beginners.

10 – Fish Food

Food is very important for several reasons, growth, color and health, and the amount given to the fish is also important.

The secret of correct feeding is a quality feed, and knowing the right amount to give without polluting the water, associating the quality of the chosen feed with the dosage offered to the animals.

11 – Aquarium Maintenance

Change 20% to 30% of the aquarium water weekly, fortnightly or monthly, it all depends on the size of your aquarium, so that possible toxins are neutralized.

Before changing it, it is essential to prepare the water with additives that remove chlorine and heavy metals.

Introduction

Platys are peaceful, hardy, active and very colorful.

In number they can effectively move a drab aquarium. They have a very curious personality, and will explore all levels of the tank. They are also suitable for Nano Tanks.

Maximum size
Usually around 4 to 6 cm in length, with females occasionally growing a little longer, to a maximum of 8 cm.

Water quality
Temperature: 24°C – 28°C.
PH: 7.0-8.0
General hardness: 200—300 ppm.

They prefer slightly alkaline water but are generally able to tolerate a wide range of water qualities and are quite hardy.

Coloring
The species has many color varieties like red, black, blue, yellow, wagtail, tuxedo, neon, mickey-mouse and many more.

Aquarium Setup
An easy-to-care fish that does well in all types of community aquariums. A good-sized aquarium with live plants and open areas.

food
Platys eat most aquarium fish foods and also feed on any algae that grows inside the aquarium. They will benefit from a varied diet.

They can also be kept in outdoor ponds to control mosquito levels and algae levels.

reproduction
Platys are viviparous, which means that females give birth to a fully formed and free-swimming baby about 30 days after fertilization.
Sexes can be easily distinguished; the male’s anal fin is modified to form the Gonopodium (the male sexual organ).
